What is Laylat Al-Qadr?

There is no day or night that has been emphasized more than the night known as Laylat Al-Qadr (the Night of Decree). The Qur’an’s 97th chapter is dedicated entirely to this night:

Bismillāhir-raḥmānir-raḥīm innā anzalnāhu fī laylati al-qadr wa mā adrāk mā laylatu al-qadr laylatu al-qadri khayrun min alfi shahr tanazzalul malā’ikatu wa-r-rūḥu fīhā bi-idhni rabbihim min kulli amr salāmun hiya ḥattā maṭlai al-fajr.

Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.

🌙 During the final ten days of Ramadan, The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to strive hard in worship more than He did at any other time. A’isha (RA) said:

“With the start of the last ten days of Ramadan, the Prophet (ﷺ) used to tighten his waist belt (i.e. work hard) and used to pray all the night, and used to keep his family awake for the prayers.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari

🌙 Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

"Whoever established prayers on the night of Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for a reward from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari

🤲 Dua for Laylat Al-Qadr

Aisha (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) said, “I asked the Messenger of Allah: ‘O Messenger of Allah, if I know what night is the night of Qadr, what should I say during it?’ He said: Say:

Allahumma innaka ‘afuwun karīm, tuḥibb al-‘afwa fa’fu ‘annā yā karīm.

O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, Generous, and You love forgiveness; so forgive us, O Generous One.
